Mystery squash

What is this?

What is this?

Well, spring, summer and fall have come and gone. The last CSA box of the Fall season is well behind us and as I write this, there’s snow on the ground.

Tonight after I took this photo, we (I mean, Erin) cooked this thing into a delicious meal. But not before pondering what it’s called. I think it looks like the thing they use in Curling, you know, the sport they play on ice with brooms and a granite stone. Here’s a picture of an old-style curling stone.

And here’s a modern one.

I assure you, our dinner was far tastier than its curling counterpart. Extremely edible, as my uncle Richard says.

But the sport of curling is still a mystery, as is the name of this squash. Feel free to leave a comment if you know.

looks like something from the Australian Blue group of pumpkins, maybe a Crown or Jarrahdale variety? check out the Compleat Squash by Amy Goldman or google it for more details…

Brian and I had the same question! We had to know and performed an extensive google search. The best we could come up with is either the Hubbard squash or more likely kabocha squash. It was delcious. I roasted it with bacon! YUM

NOT a Hubbard, those puppies are huge. Kabocha is correct – I used two of them just this evening (Yep, we;ve had them around this long) to make a creamy pumpkin n brown rice dish.
