Box

What’s in the box this week?

The week of September 1, 2010 we’re getting: assorted peppers, carrots, apples, finally – some nice head lettuce, Swiss chard, eggplants, zucchini (or another eggplant - we ran short of zucchini), winter squash – an assortment of kinds & colors – please remember that we only send things that can be eaten – there is a variety of acorn squash in some of the boxes – called Carnival – multi-colored – this is an edible winter squash – not a decorative gourd – we ran into this questions last year – so I am reminding you – and finally a small amount of tomatoes – which unfortunately seem to be winding down rather fast – as the weather has just been so hot & dry.

The week of August 25, 2010 we’re getting: Sweet peppers, hot peppers, potatoes, watermelon, tomatoes, eggplant, beans.

The week of August 18, 2010 we’re getting: melon, beans, carrots, potatoes, peppers, eggplant, zucchini, cucumber and beets with tops.

The week of August 11, 2010 we’re getting: Ginger gold apples, a melon, (either cantaloupe or watermelon), zucchini, cucumber, onion, pepper, tomatoes and a green – (could be bok choi, head lettuce, romaine lettuce or Swiss chard). The cantaloupes are ripe & ready to eat - as is the watermelon – eat soon – keep in the fridge.

The week of August 4, 2010 we’re getting: watermelon, sweet corn, zucchini, cucumber, tomato, green or red sweet pepper, onion and a green (either Swiss chard, collards or head lettuce).

The week of July 28, 2010 we’re getting: watermelon, potatoes, zucchini, cucumber, tomato, Swiss chard, onion, corn and herb.

The week of July 21, 2010 we’re getting: peaches (2 shares in each box), 1-2 tomato, onion, 1-2 cucumber, zucchini, potatoes, beets with tops and an assorted green – (salad, collard, Swiss chard, bok choy).

The week of July 14, 2010 we’re getting: basil, sweet corn, onion (fresh onion should be stored in the refrigerator), beans (green, yellow or flat green Roma beans), zucchini (several different varieties in a variety of colors, including white. These are edible summer squash, not gourds), fennel (you can use both the bulb & the fronds), potatoes, peaches and blueberries.

The week of July 7, 2010 we’re getting: kale, cabbage, zucchini, potato, cilantro, peaches & apricots mixed, tomatoes & beans.

Every step was taken to make sure the produce made it through the day. Please know that we hope all is well but there may be hidden damage due to the heat. Please store your produce in the refrigerator. Try to use up things soon – everything was really ripe & ready to eat.

A note about the peaches & apricots – they are real ripe – eat soon, some of the fruits may have a whitish powder on them – this is – diatomaceous earth - used to deal with chewing bugs & also sun scald, this is an approved product for organic production – you should wash it off before eating your fruit – this a food grade product.

Tomatoes – some of them may have split – irrigation was used to offset the problem of the heat – this caused some splitting – these tomatoes are fine to eat – they just don’t look pretty.

RETURN THOSE BOXES! ‘Nuff said.

The week of August 26, 2009 we’re getting Sweet corn, apples, eggplant, zucchini, onion, herb, beans, beets with tops, and - a special treat - a sunflower head for everyone!

Here are some suggestions from Farmer Pam about the sunflower heads:

The sunflower heads are freshly cut, so you do need to let them dry before you eat the seeds - any flat surface will do. Please do not leave them outside overnight - the morning dew will slow the drying and also your little forest friends may find it irresistible! You may also dry the heads for making a fall wreath for your door and then later, feed them to the birdies. We like to nail ours flat to a piece of plywood – that way you can move it around. Just a few 3-4 inch nails will hold the edges flat.

Pam also warns about taking extra care with this week’s vegetables:

A word about the veggies: this extreme weather has really beat things up. Please use your veggies promptly. The beans and the herb should be opened up and checked for moisture - dry them or put them in a new container and use them soon!

The week of August 19, 2009 we’re getting Red cabbage, zucchini, cucumber, carrots, SWEET peppers (they are multi color - they are sweet), eggplant, sweet corn, leek, and salad mix.

The week of August 12, 2009 we’re getting carrots, corn, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, eggplant, salad mix OR head lettuce and - late breaking news - tomatoes!

Here are some special instructions from Farmer Pam:

These tomatoes are ripe and ready to eat - they should be stored on the counter. Many of the heirloom open pollinated tomatoes yield to the touch, not like those hard artificially ripened ones in the grocery store. Handle with care- they do not bounce!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The week of June 24, 2009 we’re getting carrots, bok choi, kohlrabi, beets, garlic scapes, herb, peas, potatoes, salad or baby spinach, and cherries.
