The week of June 9, 2008, we got asparagus, peas, garlic scapes, lettuce, onion, strawberries, swiss chard, potato and herb.
On Karen’s blog from June 2, you can find two recipes. Karen says “One is the Chocolate Beet Cake - absolutely delicious. I was shocked at how easy it was to make, too. Then, I made a strawberry rhubarb pudding cake after we received rhubarb that first week.”
Each year I write about the plight of the European honey bee. As many of you know, bees are crucial to the pollination of fruits and vegetables. Here’s a blog that reviews the facts and has some good recommendations for what you can do to provide a friendly environment for wild bees, who may have to step in to do the work of the vanishing European variety.
Winnie, our Kensington site coordinator, reports that the National Cathedral plans to close its greenhouse at the end of the month. If you have been to the greenhouse at the Cathedral, you know what a loss that is. Click here if you want to chime in to urge them to save the greenhouse.
In the June 5 Style section of the Washington Post, there was a front page article about the “grow-your-own” trend. Homeowners are saving money by growing some of their own vegetables. As the gardeners among you know, it is not as easy as it seems. What I like about it is that more people will connect with their food source and have greater appreciation for their local farmers.

One reviewer said it was right up there with books by Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto and Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
