October & November are traditional months for Amish weddings- usually held on Tuesdays & Thursdays.
Weddings usually go from - 9am ( oh yeah) – worship service, wedding , then mid day meal – dinner – then afternoon worship & then ‘visiting & singing’ the singing goes on for about 3 hours – you better be ready – then the young hands go home to ‘milk’ while the young married & old married ‘visit’ again - then – supper – then more visiting & another round of ‘singing’ (around near midnight – oh yeah) – all ‘a cappella’ – not in English – the Amish service is segregated – women in one area – men in another.
My husband & I have been to several weddings – mostly for our female workers – I must say – the entire celebration is heartwarming & also wrenching (we lose a good worker) but then again – there are usually younger sisters waiting in the wings to take the older sister’s place – and we can sometimes count on having the new ‘husband’ ready for some ‘heavy work ‘ when we need it – at least until the ‘new visitor to the farm’ appears.
Chinese or Napa Cabbage is a regular at Amish weddings. The Chinese cabbage is shredded (julienned) and then layered with carrots, radishes, onions, etc and dressed with a creamy style (the olive oil is emulsified) dressing - an outstanding dish.
